The ending of the TV series "The Last Survivor" has sparked widespread discussion. The finale of the first season of the show was aired last weekend. After seeing this scene, viewers who have not seen the finale of the game version have generally discussed the cruel behavior and moral dilemma in the show. However, according to the introduction of the show's creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin in an interview, the ending of the TV series version has almost been adjusted.

If you haven't watched the finale of "The Last Survivor" ten years after the game was released/a week after the TV series is released, then here I would like to remind you that this article contains spoilers for the finale content.

The Last Survivor Season 1 finale is a violent and deceptive ending. Joel was unwilling to let Fireflies study the antidote by killing Ellie, so he turned on the unparalleled mode and forced Ellie to rescue her. But instead of telling Ellie about the process, he blew a big liar about what happened in the hospital. At the end, Joel and Ellie face to face. Ellie asked Joel to tell the truth. Joel swore to the sky that she made up was true, and Ellie answered a very rich "okey". The whole game and the entire TV series came to an abrupt end here.

But according to Craig Mazin, directors have been considering taking a different approach to shooting for the last scene.

However, this change is not for the last episode of the big event. Mazin said that it was originally designed to allow Joel to stop the camera for a while after he finally told his lies. In an interview, Mazin introduced the process of this consideration:

"Our director Ali Abasi has been thinking about this slightly longer version and the emotional impact is stronger. In this version, Ally will say 'okey' and turn around and walk away. Joel will keep staring at her. Then the two will walk towards Jackson, but not together, but one in front and one behind. The camera lingers here for a while, and then slowly fades. This will bring some beautiful mood."

This is a completely different way of dealing with it. The current sudden ending approach makes the emotional impact burst out suddenly. In Mazin's words, it is "forever paused at that moment", but the change in the scene above will also be thought-provoking, conveying a hint of a huge rift between Ellie and Joel after a lie, making the subsequent events more natural.

Mazin said there has been a lot of discussions about this change internally. But in the end they still think that the ending of the first game is too important and cannot be changed casually.

"Everyone has a feeling of 'what should we do'. And the possibility of discussion is unlimited. The original party will feel very upset because the TV series is not handled in the game, and some viewers may feel unhappy because they just watch the game ending in the TV series again. And what will others feel? Using Ally's specialWriting as the end of the first season is very particular. No one knows what will happen next. I don't know what she is going to do. Will she leave? Will she continue to walk with Joel? How does she feel? The plot will always pause at that moment. ”

Neil Druckmann also said that the upcoming season two news will also affect people's perception of the first season finale. When this game first landed on PS3 in 2013, everyone didn't know if there would be a sequel to it later.

"When we made this game and ended up being a big success, no one would make a sequel in the future. So people regarded this scene as the final ending rather than some suspense, which would be easier to accept. But now it's different. Everyone would say 'Oh, this is the suspense of the second season' because everyone knows it's going to be the second season. So we still want to use this ending again to see if everyone will have different reactions."

In short, if you don’t know if the effect will be better after the changes, it is a better choice to stabilize the ending of the original work. However, in the second season, I don’t know if they will rethink whether to follow the original.
