YouTube is a video website with an early stage company located in San Bruno, California. Registered on February 15, 2005, it was founded by Chinese American Chen Shijun and others, allowing users to download, watch and share videos or short videos.

In November 2006, Google acquired YouTube for US$1.65 billion and operated it as a subsidiary. But Google has always been very cautious about how to make money through YouTube. After being acquired, YouTube is still popular among netizens around the world. Citibank analysts believe that based on the entire year of 2012, Google may receive $2.4 billion in net income from YouTube.

On January 3, 2014, YouTube announced the demonstration of the 4K HD video streaming service at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (CES). The service uses Google's video encoding and codec technology VP9. Unregistered users of the website can still watch videos directly, while registered users can upload an unlimited number of videos. When the video has a possible offensive nature content, it is only available to registered users over the age of 18 to view. As the current online video service provider in the industry, YouTube's system processes tens of millions of video clips every day, providing high-level video upload, distribution, display and browsing services to thousands of users around the world. In February 2015, CCTV pushed the Spring Festival Gala to overseas websites such as YouTube for the first time.

The Switch app "YouTube" was released on November 9, 2018. Google announced that it would close its YouTube gaming channel on May 30, 2019, and that most of the features and content available on the platform were reintegrated or incorporated into YouTube. In October 2019, Google shut down YouTube messaging service.

On June 30, 2020, the 2020 BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands Ranking was released, and YouTube ranked 37th.
