According to Eurgamer, former Assassin's Creed developer said that the series was originally planned to end in the form of a trilogy, with the story ending as the world destroyed, and Desmond and Lucy will travel elsewhere to start a new human civilization.
The details of this ending were originally published by Lars de Wildt, a researcher at the University of Leuven, Belgium who studies conspiracy theories, religions and other beliefs in digital media culture, interviewed many former Assassin's Creed developers in 2019 and recently explained the details of the story collected from these interviews.
Lars de Wildt wrote: "The original plan was pieced together based on my interview with Patrice Désilet, the original creator of Assassin's Creed and Alex Hutchinson, creative director of Assassin's Creed 3, and simply put, the third game will end in the form of resolving the current conflict, and Desmond will use the knowledge and skills of all his ancestors, including Altaïr of Assassin's Creed 1 and Agio of Assassin's Creed 2, to defeat Abstergo."
In an interview with Eurgamer on January 21, Assassin's Creed 3 creative director Alex Hutchinson recalled discussing the matter with students and said that early game plans really focused on modern showdowns with Desmond as the main character.
Lars de Wildt continued: "In addition, 2012 is the end of the world, and Desmond and Lucy will go elsewhere to start a new civilization, just like Adam and Eve." Patrice Désilets told Lars de Wildt: "That's why she was called Lucy after Afa's Australopithecus."
As for where Desmond and Lucy are going, Patrice Désilets said: "Boom! It's a spaceship!"
Of course, when Assassin's Creed 3 was released in 2012, plans changed a lot, and while it still ended the Desmond story and the current conflict, many other details changed a lot.
The success of the series allowed Egio to extend his own trilogy game, and Patrice Désilets left Ubisoft after a public fall in love with company owner Yves Guillemot. The character Lucy has also withdrawn from Assassin's Creed. Additionally, Abstergo remains a villain in the series in many of the subsequent games.
